Far North ICT Trust addresses digital literacy in the Far North, running Northland Connect, Stepping UP – free computer training for adults – at Kaitaia Library and Kerikeri Procter Library. They provide an innovative wireless/satellite initiative at Umawera School and Okaihau School. They are a Digital Inclusion Alliance delivery partner.

23 Things for Teaching is a free online learning series for NZ teachers on digital technologies, from The University of Auckland’s Faculty of Education and Social Work. It contains resources from a self-paced online course run in 2016.

Better Digital Futures for Seniors is a nationwide programme for seniors (people aged 65+) seeking help in going online. Participants choose a Digital Pathway to learn new skills and build confidence using computers, smartphones, or tablets, and the internet. Each Pathway is four x 2 hour long classes delivered in a small group at local libraries, community centres, retirement homes and other locations throughout the country. Learners can attend any of the pathways, depending on confidence level and experience with digital technologies.

CoderDojo is a volunteer led, global, free club, giving girls and boys from 7 to 14 the opportunity to learn computer coding in a fun and friendly environment. We meet on Wednesdays at NMIT from 6:30 to 8 pm.

The Digital Inclusion Alliance Aotearoa (DIAA) purpose is: to work collaboratively with Alliance Partners in delivering digital inclusion programmes to their communities; pursue funding for inclusion initiatives; provide a forum for sharing information, tools and resources, outcome metrics and results; be a voice for digitally under-served and disadvantaged communities; and promote a joined-up whole-of-community approach in pursuing a more digitally included society.

The Alliance also coordinates the Stepping UP, Skinny Jump and Better Digital Futures for Seniors programmes.

Technology helps with many common issues for seniors, including loneliness, lack of mobility, and deteriorating health. But many seniors are threatened by technology. Digital Seniors helps seniors learn and use technology.

We bring together volunteers to provide Wairarapa seniors with free personalised one-on-one coaching. We bring communities together to build digital inclusion and empowerment of their seniors. We work together with businesses, councils and community initiatives, we train volunteers, and manage an 0800 phone support. We work with government to close the senior digital divide.

We encourage our tamariki to think creatively, work collaboratively, reason systematically and reflect Te Ao Māori. To show them that they can be creators, developers and producers of tech, not just consumers of it.

DORA is an old school bus converted into a high tech digital learning centre for the DIAA’s Stepping UP and other programmes. Up to 15 people can train with onboard laptops, Chromebooks, satellite and 3G internet connections. DORA travels around NZ supporting digital inclusion programmes that need a mobile classroom.

Computer basics training is the hub’s most well-attended service, with hundreds of individual sessions a year. Job hunting is another popular service. The hub also provides people with access to the internet (free for 30 mins) and computer.

RaWiri Residents’ Association provides community services and facilities from the Rata Vine Community House that are beneficial for the residents of Rata Vine, Wiri and the wider Community. Services include local MP weekly clinic in the house; after school computer centre and homework programme; training of volunteers and co-ordination of the RaWiri Safety Patrol; cooking classes to provide healthy meals on a low income; and continued development of the community garden.

As an independent, member-driven organisation, we have a 27-year history with more than 200 members aged from 51 to 97 from a wide variety of backgrounds and skill levels.

Our objectives include:

• enabling people over the age of 50 to use desktop computers, laptops, cellphones, tablets, etc in an economical and relaxed manner
• providing opportunities for those already with computing experience to explore favourite specialty subjects
• encouraging experienced users to assist others in areas of their expertise

Learning is conducted by our enthusiastic tutors (mainly members) in a very relaxed and cheerful manner with a wide range of tutorial and discussion group sessions. Sessions are each 2-hours on weekdays (mornings and some afternoons). To satisfy demand some are now available on Saturdays.
